'Breaking Dawn - Part 1': The Reviews Are In!

Read what critics have to say about the latest 'Twilight Saga' installment.

"Breaking Dawn - Part 1," the penultimate entry in "The Twilight Saga," hit theaters Friday (November 18), and millions of fans around the world will see what Bella, Edward and Jacob are up to in this installment.

Many of them won't read a single review before going to the theater, but if you are curious about what the nation's critics have to say about the latest vampire romance, we've taken a sampling that best represents the overall consensus.

Turns out, "Breaking Dawn" is just like every other "Twilight" movie. Fans won't be disappointed, but outsiders may have trouble getting adjusted, since the film doesn't take any breaks to explain what's come before. But director Bill Condon brings some nice touches with his first venture into the series.

Here's what the critics have to say.

The Story
" 'Dawn' picks up where 'Eclipse' left off, with our heroes Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) set to wed. The wedding is as storybook as the romance, which explains why there are so many 'Twilight' moms: Bella is perceptive and patient, saving sex for marriage. Edward is loyal and has been waiting a century to lose his virginity. See a zombie be that patient." — Scott Bowles, USA Today

The Honeymoon Sex Scene
"The 'Twilight' movies have devoted three episodes to Bella Swan's clinging to her virginity despite the compelling appeal of Edward Cullen, the vampire. Now comes 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1,' in which you have to give her credit: She holds out until after her wedding. Then she and Edward fly to Brazil and a luxurious honeymoon hideaway on the beach, where the morning after her wedding night she is black and blue with bruises, the frame of the bed is broken, all of the furniture is tossed around and the draperies are shredded. Good gravy! What happened? We have no idea. The movie doesn't show us! Yes, the most eagerly awaited deflowering in recent movie history takes place entirely off-screen." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Taylor Lautner
"As Jacob, Edward's long-suffering, oft-rejected rival for Bella's affection, Mr. Lautner has plenty of reasons to strip angry: he can turn into a wolf, for starters, and Jacob's musculature has long been one of the most special of the movies' effects. That's reason enough for Mr. Condon to get the character's shirt off, as is the unavoidable truth that Mr. Lautner, whose pumped physique and flat affect bring to mind one of those friendly pizza delivery boys in a pornographic movie, remains a dish best served with as few words and clothes as possible." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

On Splitting Up "Breaking Dawn"
"When the decision was made to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two films to bring that blockbuster series to a close, there was cynical talk regarding mercenary motives to milk as many dollars as possible out of the franchise. Once the films came out, however, that talk stopped, so emphatically did the massive narrative incident justify the extended length. On the basis of 'Breaking Dawn - Part 1,' though, the same cannot be said of this series ender, which feels as bloated and anemic as Bella becomes during her pregnancy." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

Final Word
"The fourth film in the 'Twilight' series reveals a flash or two of real filmmaking (mostly in a suggestively grotesque birthing sequence), enough to save it from pure lousiness. But a significant number of its 117 minutes do seem like hours, and whenever certain actors take the lead and set the pace of the dialogue, time itself begins to crawl backward and the breaking dawn begins to feel like yesterday's breaking dawn, or last Tuesday's." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Nas In 'Rare Form' On New Album, Salaam Remi Says

'All his verses on the album, it sounds like you're getting smacked upside the head,' producer tells Mixtape Daily.

Behind the Beats: Salaam Remi
Salaam Remi and Nas didn't start out as buddies, but some things are just meant to be.

By the time Nas was putting out his classic rap LP Illmatic, Salaam was separately making his mark, already having produced for seminal hip-hop star Kurtis Blow at the age of 14. Though they hailed from the same Queens, New York, neighborhood and ran in similar circles, Nas and Salaam didn't hook up until 2001, when Nas requested a beat from Remi for his Stillmatic LP.

Now, 10 years later, he and Nas are still at it, working on God's Son's upcoming 10th solo studio album.

"Life is different, and at this point, life is good and dudes is looking younger now than they did when they were 25," Remi told Mixtape Daily. "So he's just in that rare form."

It's surprising that they didn't hook up sooner, but after going through a small spat with one of Nas' mentors, Large Professor, Remi never got the chance to really get to know Nas earlier. But a 2001 chance meeting in L.A. led to one of hip-hop's most organic partnerships.

"I created the track for 'What Goes Around (Poison),' and I sent it to him," Remi recalled. "And when I sent it to him, at the end of the day, we're in the same neighborhood."

Remi's discography is long and diverse. In 1991, he worked alongside Marley Marl on Craig G's Now, That's More Like It album, and three years later, he produced Ini Kamoze's reggae hit "Here Comes the Hotstepper." Salaam, however, is most known for producing the Fugees' 1996 smash single "Fu-Gee-La" from their Grammy-winning The Score LP. Then, of course, there is his work with Amy Winehouse on her 2006 breakout, Back to Black.

Since hooking up, Salaam has been responsible for a number of Nas bangers: 2003's "Made You Look" was noted for its authentic New York feel, while the uplifting "I Can" sampled its drums from the Honeydrippers' "Impeach the President," one of the most recognizable samples in hip-hop. In 2004, Remi crafted "Thief's Theme" and Nas' collaboration with his dad, "Bridging the Gap"

More recently, the two have come up with the gritty "Nasty," the first single from the Queens rap legend's upcoming album. On the boom-bap-inspired track, Nas chooses to bypass any notions of going pop, instead setting his sets on hip-hop's underground. It's a welcomed departure from the hip-hop that occupies top 40 radio these days, but Salaam promised that the sound on Esco's next album will be diverse.

"Musically, I have an array of records," he said. "You got some 'Nasty'-type stuff, you have stuff that's in the middle, up, down. I have all types of stuff. Just at the end of the day, we have to see what feels right for that package of 10 to 12 songs, because it's way more songs."

The expectations for this new Nas album are high, and Remi assured fans that his friend will deliver.

"He sounds like he's on his A-game writing," he said. "All his features at this point, all his verses on the album, it sounds like you're getting smacked upside the head. As much as 'Nasty' has that type of beat, it's really him on the beat that's making it connect all the way."

INTERVIEW FAB: Steve Stoute And Pharrell DISCUSS His Impact On Louis Vuitton Sales

Steve Stoute sat down with taste maker Pharrell recently as a part of "The Tanning Effect" interview series and you'll be interested to know how Pharrell has had an impact on the global sales of Louis Vuitton. Get the deets inside.....

What's most interesting about Steve Stoute's "The Tanning Effect" interview series is that it complete debunks any myths that hip hop is not a global force that changes, moves and shapes pop culture.

In the latest series of videos, he speaks to rapper Pharrell. Among the gems, we discover that Pharrell was the motivation for Louis Vuitton to get into the sunglasses business.

It's interesting to see how an artist vision of a certain type of lifestyle (e.g. Louis Vuitton’s classic “MILLIONAIRE” sunglasses) translates into an actual product and big money sales.

The series clearly shows that world would be a much darker, boring place without hip hop.

Will Conrad Murray Go To Prison?

Michael Jackson cardiologist found guilty but legal experts doubt he will do hard time.
By Gil Kaufman

With the involuntary manslaughter trial of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray finally wrapped, following the jury's guilty verdict on Monday afternoon (November 7), the next question is, how much time will Murray serve behind bars and where?

Before the jury's verdict came down on Monday, MTV News spoke to Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi, who explained what kind of sentence Murray is likely to face.

"The overcrowding laws in state prison right now could very well result in Conrad Murray getting a probationary sentence, meaning that any custody time would be spent in county jail rather than state prison," said Cavalluzzi, who does not have first-hand knowledge of the case, but has worked a range of criminal matters in L.A. courts from misdemeanor battery to homicide. "Right now, the ruling is that state prisons should be only for the most violent offenders, and I don't think that Conrad Murray would fall into that category."

Cavalluzzi said that involuntary manslaughter, of which Murray was convicted on one count, is a nonviolent offense that doesn't involve the cardiologist being accused of intentionally harming Jackson. "What they're saying is that he may have been a good man who made a horrible mistake and that the mistake that he made rises to criminal negligence," he said.

After the verdict was announced, Murray was denied bail and ordered to jail, where he will remain in custody until his November 29 sentencing hearing.

Although the charge Murray was facing carried a maximum four-year prison sentence, Cavalluzzi said that often times a defendant like Murray, with no criminal record and who has been convicted for the first time, has a very good chance of staying out of custody altogether. But given the high-profile nature of the case and the pressure from Jackson's family — Michael's mother Katherine, father Joe and siblings Jermaine and La Toya Jackson were among the family members who turned up at the courthouse after the verdict on Monday — to have Murray slapped with the maximum penalty, it's likely he will do some time in custody.

Following the announcement of the guilty verdict, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley confirmed to reporters that due to those recent changes in California law, Murray was not likely to do any prison time. "It was a homicide, someone lost their life, three children lost time with their father because of someone's criminal negligence," said Cooley when asked if the prosecution was worth it given the almost-certain knowledge that Murray would not spend time in prison. "In that regard, it was worth it to prove that point."

Cooley lashed out at the new sentencing guidelines (called AB109) for nonviolent offenders and reiterated that he was against them from the beginning, labeling them a "fool's errand," and predicting that the Murray case would be the first of "many, many, many poster children cases that will reveal why 109 is a complete failure and criminal justice disaster."

Professor Robert Weisberg, co-director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center and a law professor at Sanford agreed that because of sentencing laws, Murray will probably do his time in county lockup. "Involuntary manslaughter might sound violent, but it's not, so he won't go to prison," said Weisberg, who does not have a connection to the case either. As we've seen with other nonviolent offenders such as Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, the overcrowding situation in Los Angeles county jail is also an issue, and due to similar mandates, defendants often avoid serving anywhere near their full sentences in county as well.

"It is very common, especially for a probationary sentence, where someone is sentenced to custody time in county jail, that the county will then release them on something called house arrest," Cavalluzzi said. "It is very common in a case like this that someone could be given house arrest if they are sentenced to probation."

House arrest has several forms, though, which can range from 24-hour-lockdown home confinement, where a person is prohibited from leaving their home to exceptions in which they are allowed to come and go for doctor's appointments, counseling or professional business.

At the sentencing hearing later this month, Jackson's family is likely to make the case for the maximum sentence, while the defense may once again bring up former patients and colleagues who will attest to the doctor's good qualities. In the end, though, it is up to the judge to decide Murray's sentence. "[Both arguments] could sway the judge either way," Cavalluzzi said. "It's difficult to know how home confinement would look for Dr. Murray because one of the main exceptions to home confinement is a person's ability to continue to engage in their livelihood."

Given that Murray is now a convicted felon who has been found guilty of homicide in California, Cooley said the doctor will lose his license to practice medicine in the state. He added that he hoped other states would follow suit and revoke Murray's right to practice medicine as well.

MTV News will be covering the Conrad Murray case live. Go to MTVNews.com for breaking news, reactions and analysis from Los Angeles or tune to MTV for the latest updates.

Britney Spears And Howie D Have 'Grown Up' Together

Now, Brit is taking the Backstreet Boy on tour with her in South America.

Britney Spears may be the leading lady on the Femme Fatale Tour, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to bring some guys along for the ride.

Next up, Backstreet Boy Howie D is slated to hit the road with Spears, following in the footsteps of DJ Pauly D and Joe Jonas. The South American tour dates — which kick off November 20, days after Howie releases his solo album Back to Me — were an enticing offer to the pop singer.

"I embraced it with open arms," he told MTV News of the trek, which ends November 28. "She's such a great, talented person. We've known each other for many, many years."

He isn't lying: Howie and Britney grew up together in the industry, with the Backstreet Boys and Spears two of the figureheads of the late-'90s pop revival. Howie said they're rooted in the same place, which will lend itself nicely to touring together.

"We kind of came out of the same camp, out of the Orlando pop scene with us and 'NSYNC and Britney," he recalled. "I feel like we've all grown together and have very similar, parallel lives with us and our music, [with] certain moments being very, very hot, certain moments not, and just riding the wave up and down as it's going. Even [with our] personal lives, having families, having kids. I have a huge respect for her, not only as an artist, but as a person. It's good to be around people you've known and people you've grown up with."

So what keeps people coming back for more from the likes of Howie and Britney? He has a theory: "It's a test of good music being out there," he said. "We really take pride in making good records, timeless records, and being true to our craft and trying to give our fans what they want ... trying to constantly take each record to the next level, push the envelope."
